Hong Kong Film Awards (HKFA) and International Planning History Book Prize

The Hong Kong Film Awards (HKFA) is one of the most prestigious and competitive award ceremonies in Asia, honouring outstanding film achievements. The awards were first presented in 1994 and is open to all films that meet the three criteria of the awards, which include: the film director is a Hong Kong resident, at least two persons of the film’s production crew are Hong Kong residents, and the movie has been commercially released in Hong Kong within the past year.

Professor Cecilia L. Chu has received the 2024 International Planning History Society Book Prize for her monograph, Building Colonial Hong Kong: Speculative Development and Segregation in the City, published by Routledge. This renowned international book award recognises significant contributions to the study of planning history.

Five scientists receive hk prize

During the Hong Kong Science and Technology Forum this week, five scientists were awarded the Shaw Prize in Hong Kong for their breakthrough achievements in astronomy, life science and medicine, physical sciences, and mathematical sciences. This year’s astronomy prize was awarded to Shrinivas R Kulkarni of California Institute of Technology for his discoveries on millisecond pulsars, gamma-ray bursts and supernovae. The life science and medicine prize was shared by Swee Lay Thein of Universiti Malaya and Stuart Orkin of the David G Nathan Distinguished Professor of Paediatrics at Harvard Medical School for their discovery of mechanisms underlying fetal-to-adult haemoglobin switch, which makes it possible to develop revolutionary therapies for sickle cell anaemia and thallasemia.

The 19th Hong Kong Arts Development Awards Scheme was launched this year, with the aim of honouring veteran arts practitioners and introducing emerging talents to the community. The awards also reward organisations and individuals for their active involvement in arts promotion and education, as well as patrons who generously support local arts events.
