The Sidney Prize

In a world where everything is getting shorter, the Sidney Prize stands athwart technology, yelling: STOP! The monthly award honors long-form journalism and thought pieces that demonstrate how investigative reporting and deep storytelling can advance humanity. Named for Sidney Hillman, the founder of Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America and early precursor to Workers United SEIU, the prize recognizes journalists who work to illuminate critical social issues and seek justice.

Every month, the Sydney Prize is given to a journalist whose piece of writing has had a significant impact on our global culture and the way we see the world. The winner receives $500, a bottle of union-made wine, and a certificate designed by New Yorker cartoonist Edward Sorel. Nominations are open to the public, and winners are selected by a panel of judges. The prize is funded by the Hillman Foundation and the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America.

Awarded by the City of Sydney, this prize was created to acknowledge “leadership in turning outrage into action and contributing to building a better Australia.” The award is presented to an Australian woman who demonstrates leadership in fighting for human rights, women’s equality, and peace. The winner is invited to attend a special event and lecture at Sydney Town Hall, where she is formally awarded the prize by the Mayor of Sydney Clover Moore.

The Neilma Sidney Short Story Prize, hosted by Overland magazine and the Malcolm Robertson Foundation, is awarded to a short piece of fiction with a travel theme. The judges will consider stories that move beyond a simple description of a place or landscape – they want to know how you got there, what you saw and felt, and why it matters.

Runners-up are given $750 each. The winning entry will be published in Overland’s autumn 2024 issue, and will also appear online. Subscriptions are available at a discounted rate for those who wish to enter the competition.

In addition to the prestigious Sidney Prize, there are other prizes that aim to promote science. The physics prize is one such example, which is awarded to researchers who have submitted outstanding research in the field of physics. This is the first time that both men and women have competed for this prize, with each golfer teeing off on scaled tees to make it fair for everyone.

Other prizes, such as the Sydney Prize, are aimed at recognizing the achievements of individuals who have worked hard toward realizing their dreams. This prestigious prize is awarded by the Sydney Philosophical Society, and it has been awarded to several notable people. These individuals are encouraged to continue their efforts, and they can use the prize money to help them along the way. Whether they’re a researcher or a writer, they can use the prize money to help them further their careers and improve the quality of their work. This prize is a great way to give back to those who have done well in their careers and contributes to the advancement of science.
