The HK Prize Launches a New Scholarship Programme

Hong Kong has long been a global leader in science and technology, with leading scientists and engineers from across the world visiting the city to conduct research and exchange knowledge. To further encourage young people to pursue a career in science, the Government set up the Hong Kong Science Prize to recognise outstanding scientific achievements by undergraduate students.

In this year’s competition, teams of students from a wide range of disciplines submitted their entries on various themes related to the theme “War and Peace”. The winning teams were presented with the prizes during a ceremony on 12 May. The adjudicators and the students from the winning teams shared their experiences and insights, and reflected on the knowledge they gained through participating in this competition.

The HKSAR Government and the Jockey Club have jointly established a new scholarship programme for Hong Kong-born students to support them through their university studies in Australia. Past recipients have said that receiving the financial support through this scholarship has helped them to build up their confidence and strengthen their dedication to academic study, allowing them to focus on learning. Your gift will help these promising students fulfil their potential at UQ, making a significant impact on them and their futures.

At the event’s launch, Yam Wing-wah, founding fellow of the Hong Kong Academy of Science and principal pro-vice-chancellor of The University of Hong Kong, urged the media to keep on reporting about scientific progress in Greater China, particularly Hong Kong, in order to promote the development of our society. “As an annual grand science event, the HK Prize provides a platform for enlightening future lights by highlighting the bright ideas of young scholars and researchers,” he added.

As a result of the increased cost in running the event, the minimum first prize amount has been raised from HK$5 million to HK$8 million. Besides the first division prize, there are seven additional jackpots (Duo Bao Jiang) for the Quartet and First 4 Merged pool, each with a HK$2.8 million boost to the pot.

For the second consecutive time, the LIV Golf Championship hosted by the Hong Kong Jockey Club was won by a player from the mainland. This year, Sergio Garcia clinched the individual title on the short layout at the Hong Kong Country Club, beating fellow players Dean Burmester and Abraham Ancer to take home the customary $4 million prize. In addition, the Fireballs team of Garcia, Dean Burmester, David Puig and Luis Masaveu won the team trophy for the fourth time in the league’s history. The four players shared another $3 million prize. The total prize fund for this week’s event was $20 million.
